Information summary:A coalescer is a device that uses the coalescence separation principle to separate small droplets or impurities in liquids.        A coalescer is a device that uses the coalescence separation principle to separate small droplets or impurities in liquids. It is widely used in industrial scenarios that require purification, dehydration, and impurity removal, especially for processing immiscible liquid mixtures (such as oil-water, solvent water) or fluids containing trace dispersed phases. The following are its main application areas and specific explanations:
1、 Petrochemical and Oil and Gas Industry
Petrochemical industry is the most core application field of coalescers, mainly used to process oil and hydrocarbon fluids containing moisture or impurities, ensuring subsequent process safety and product quality.
1. Crude oil dehydration:
During crude oil extraction, formation water (containing salt, sediment, etc.) is mixed in. The coalescer can use a coalescer filter element to coalesce small water droplets into large droplets, which are then separated by gravity or centrifugal force to reduce the water content of crude oil (usually requiring the water content of dehydrated crude oil to be less than 0.5%), avoiding corrosion of equipment for subsequent distillation, catalysis, and other processes caused by water.
2. Purification of natural gas condensate (NGL):
The condensate generated during natural gas extraction, such as propane and butane, may carry trace amounts of water or ethylene glycol (antifreeze). Coalescing devices can remove these impurities to prevent freezing or hydrate formation at low temperatures, which can block pipelines.
3. Dehydration of lubricating oil/fuel oil:
Diesel, gasoline, and lubricating oil may be mixed with moisture during storage or transportation. The coalescer can separate free water and emulsified water to avoid oil emulsification and deterioration, ensuring the lubrication effect of engines and mechanical equipment.
4. Chemical solvent recovery:
Solvents such as ethanol and toluene may form emulsions with water after reaction or extraction, and a coalescer can efficiently separate solvents from water, achieving solvent recycling.
2、 Water treatment and environmental protection industry
In water treatment, coalescers are mainly used to remove oil substances or suspended impurities from water, and are suitable for industrial wastewater treatment and water circulation systems.
1. Treatment of oily wastewater:
The wastewater generated by industries such as mechanical processing, metal cold rolling, and food processing contains emulsified oil (oil droplet diameter is usually less than 10 μ m), which is difficult to remove in traditional sedimentation tanks. The coalescer uses a coalescence filter element made of oleophilic/hydrophilic materials to aggregate oil droplets into large oil droplets that float up (or sink down), significantly reducing the oil content in water (which can be reduced from several hundred mg/L to below 10mg/L), meeting emission standards or reuse requirements.
2. Circulating water oil removal:
If lubricating oil is mixed into the circulating cooling water of thermal power plants and chemical plants (such as pump shaft seal leakage), it will affect the heat transfer efficiency and breed microorganisms. The coalescer can quickly separate oil stains and ensure the stable operation of the circulating water system.
3、 Ship and Ocean Engineering
In the fluid systems of ships and offshore platforms, oil-water separation is a core requirement, and coalescers are one of the key equipment.
1. Ship bilge water separation:
Ship bilge water contains a mixture of fuel, lubricating oil, seawater, etc. The International Maritime Organization (IMO) requires that the oil content in the discharged water be less than 15ppm. As the core component of the bilge water processor, the coalescer can efficiently separate oil fractions and meet environmental regulations.
2. Ship fuel purification:
The heavy oil (such as HFO) used in marine diesel engines often contains moisture and mechanical impurities, which can be removed by a coalescer to avoid nozzle blockage and engine wear.
4、 Aviation and Energy Industry
1. Aviation fuel purification:
Aircraft fuel may be mixed with moisture (condensate) or particulate impurities during storage and transportation. The coalescer is the core of the fuel filtration system, which can remove moisture and particles larger than 5 μ m, prevent fuel freezing and filter blockage, and ensure safe engine operation.
2. Wind turbine hydraulic oil purification:
In the hydraulic system of wind turbines, hydraulic oil may mix with moisture or particles due to seal aging. The coalescer can separate moisture and impurities, extend the service life of hydraulic oil, and reduce equipment failures.
